Autumnal Activities To Do With The Grandchildren
Autumn has officially creeped up on us, as well as the October half-term. For many grandparents, this usually means you get given grandchildren duties while their parents are at work.
We all love spending quality time with our grandchildren, however it can be hard to think of new and exciting activities to do with them during every school holiday.
In fact, there are plenty of autumnal activities to keep everybody entertained, whether you’re looking to head outdoors or wanting fun indoor arts and crafts!
We have created this easy guide to ensure you have a fun-filled week with your favourite little ones.
Go Pumpkin Picking
Pumpkin picking allows you to get outdoors and have some fun!
Grab your wellies and go find the weirdest and most wonderful pumpkins you’ve ever seen. Make sure you take your camera to capture some big smiling faces holding their best finds!
Most farms host pumpkin picking events in the autumn, and even better you can take the pumpkins home for your next autumnal activity.
Pumpkin Decorating
Pumpkin decorating can be tailored to your grandkids’ ages. If they’re not quite old enough to create intricate designs by carving the pumpkin, they’re always old enough to do some drawing and glueing!
So pick up some coloured felt-tip pens, googly eyes, and even some pipe cleaners they can use as hair or a moustache. They could create anything from a vampire to a monster, or just a funny face! Find some great ideas here.
For any older grandchildren, the best thing about pumpkin carving is they can pick their favourite cartoon character from a film or TV show and create a new persona for their pumpkin. Even if they just create a scary face, everyone loves pumpkin carving in autumn!
Get Your Bake On!
Getting stuck in with an apron on and some flour in hand always reminds us of cosy autumn days.
There are so many options when baking, whether you keep it traditionally autumnal and make pumpkin pie or apple crumble, or you stick to the classics such as cake or cookies.
Why not reach for your favourite biscuit recipe and some coloured icing pens to have a Halloween-themed biscuit decorating competition? The winner eats all!
Get Out In Nature
No one likes to be stuck in the house all the time, and the best thing about autumn is the crisp weather and the glowing sun on your face.
So grab a scarf, hat and gloves and get out there to enjoy it! With thousands of colourful leaves on the floor and tree trunks they can jump on and walk along, the forest is a perfect place for kids!
Another great reason to go outside with your grandchildren is that walking also has many benefits for you as you age. From strengthening your muscles and bones to lowering your risk of diseases such as heart disease and colon cancer, walking for elderly people can improve your health and wellbeing in many ways.
Autumn Arts & Crafts
Getting stuck in with an arts & crafts kit can be a great activity to do with the grandchildren. It allows them to be creative!
Have them choose a fun autumn craft idea they want to try and head to your local crafts store for supplies. From autumn wreaths for their bedroom door to creating a tree drawing with real leaves stuck on, get stuck in with the grandkids!
